The Diocese (the seller) is in negotiations with a new mysterious private bidder who is apparently offering to pay more than the increased community bid. The Diocese has indicated its preference for this new bid over ours. They hold out the hope that the new bidder is planning a community element to the Old Deanery’s future use. However both the Diocese and the new bidder have so far refused all our attempts to contact the bidder to find out more. We are content to work with a private bidder if we knew what parts of the building he is proposing for community use. Our considerable fear is that he will want to develop the most attractive parts, leaving totally unsuitable remnants for the community. His motives are also unclear – is it a commercial development creating income from us, or is there philanthropic concept ? The Diocese and the bidder owe us a duty to engage and of transparency.
